Sound and Infrared Beam Camera Triggering

Now you can explore a world of brand new possibilities

The Shutter-Beam opens up a whole new world of photographic opportunities. A world of pictures with stunning visual impact of subjects never seen before, limited only by one's imagination.

By detecting the subject's movement or sound, the Shutter-Beam allows you to take pictures of the impossible. You can capture events that happen faster than the eye can see, or events that happen at times and places where we cannot be.

A multitude of features spell flexibility and that allows the Shutter-Beam to be used in all types of photography. Whether your photographic interest is NATURE, BALLISTICS, PORTRAIT, WEDDING or COMMERCIAL ... for pleasure or for profit ... the Shutter-Beam can add excitement to your images.
Just think of all the possibilities, let your imagination fly!

Motion Triggering

motion

An invisible infrared beam is bounced off a reflector, forming an invisible trip wire. ANYTHING that touches even the edge of the beam is detected and triggers an output to a camera or a flash unit. The beam can travel up to 45ft and it has unending patience, it never blinks and its lightning fast reactions give reliable and repeatable triggers the instant a subject enters the beam.

Sound Triggering

soundtrig

The Shutter-Beam has an internal microphone that picks up the sound the subject makes. The audio sensitivity is adjustable and can be set so the pop of a cork exploding out of the champagne bottle triggers the Shutter-Beam, but other sounds like talking on the set won't. From a whisper to a shout, the Shutter-Beam will capture the moment.

Camera Output

camoutput

Any camera with an electronic remote shutter release cord (wires in the cord) can be controlled via the Shutter-Beam's camera output. When hooked up this way, the Shutter-Beam replaces your finger on the shutter release with its lightning fast and incredibly reliable electronics.

Flash Output

flashoutput

To stop the fastest moving subjects, your camera is placed in a darkened studio, the shutter is held open manually on "B" (bulb) The flash is then fired directly with the strobe output of the Shutter-Beam and the resulting light provides a much faster effective shutter and can freeze much faster motion than your camera's shutter can.

Cross-beam Application

diagram

Two Shutter-Beams can be configured such that the IR beams cross and with the outputs tied in series, this will cause the camera to be triggered only at the one point in space where the beams cross and then both units are tripped simultaneously.

Optional accessory

ADDjust-A-Sec

The ADDjust-A-Sec allows you to take pictures like milk drop splashes.
It introduces a 1/10,000 to 2 second delay after detection of a subject action
and before the flash or camera is triggered.
This delay allows the subject to move before the picture is taken.
Multiple ADDjust-A-Sec units can be daisy-chained together,
each controlling its own flash unit for stroboscopic effects.

Optional accessory

Shutter Release Cords

The Shutter-Beam controls any camera
with an electronic contact closure remote shutter release cord.
Each camera has a different shutter release cable and connector combination.

Important Features

Output Lockout

The Output Lockout suppresses outputs when a subject continuously trips the Shutter-Beam, providing a time-out period when pictures will not be taken.
The feature is continuously variable from 0.2 seconds to One Shot mode
(only one picture will be taken until the unit is reset)
and this time can be used to allow flash units to recycle or to eliminate unwanted pictures.

Output Pulse Duration

The dip switched set the length of time the Shutter-Beam
holds down the camera shutter via the camera output.
The Output Pulse can be set to 14 distinct durations from 1/1,000 to 8.4 seconds.
When used with a camera motor drive this feature allows for multiple shots of an event.

Easy Beam Alignment

The Beam Align circuit simplifies the beam alignment procedure by emitting a beeping tone
that slows down in frequency as beam alignment is optimised.
This makes the operation a fast and easy process.

Visual Aids

A group of three LED's give vital information about the status of the Output Pulse Duration, Output Lockout, Beam Alignment and Trip Levels of the Shutter-Beam
They are visible from both the front and back of the unit.

External Power

A 2.1mm Power Jack is provided so that any 12V to 28V DC power source can power
the Shutter-Beam externally, overriding the internal batteries.
The optional wall transformer is plugged into this jack and with a car battery
the Shutter-Beam will last for months in the field.

KBO

The Kill Beam on Output switch turns off the IR beam during a camera output,
a necessity when using infrared film.

Make / Break

The IR beam can be set up such that ANYTHING entering (BREAK) the beam
triggers an output ... or, conversely,
anything leaving (MAKE) the beam can trigger an output.

Steady / Pulsed

Normal operation of the IR beam is in the PULSED mode where the beam can be modulated (pulsed on and off) at 10kHz. A STEADY (always on) mode is provided for extremely fast small moving objects (ballistics) so that nothing can pass through the IR beam undetected.

TTL Output

The camera output is TTL compatible and can control ANY device
that is started by a contact closure.

Low Battery

A Low Battery LED turns on when the internal batteries are low and in need of replacement.
